Edgar Rice Burroughs (September 1, 1875 March 19, 1950) was an American fiction writer best known for his celebrated and prolific output in the adventure and science-fiction genres.
Abraham Grace Merritt (January 20, 1884 August 21, 1943) known by his byline, A. Merritt was an American Sunday magazine editor and a writer of fantastic fiction.
Herbert George Wells (21 September 1866 13 August 1946) was an English writer. He was prolific in many genres, writing dozens of novels, short stories, and works of social commentary, history, satire, biography, and autobiography, and even including two books on recreational war games. He is now best remembered for his science fiction novels and is often called the "father of science fiction", along with Jules Verne and the publisher Hugo Gernsback.
Stanley Grauman Weinbaum (April 4, 1902 December 14, 1935) was an American science fiction writer. His first story, "A Martian Odyssey", was published to great acclaim in July 1934, but he died from lung cancer less than a year and a half later.
Fitz James O'Brien (25 October 1826 6 April 1862) was an Irish American Civil War soldier, writer, and poet often cited as an early writer of science fiction.
